Bassem Youssef

Satirist

Bassem Youssef, often called the “Jon Stewart of the Arab World,” is a pioneering political satirist and former host of AlBernameg, the Middle East’s first and most influential political satire program. What began as a five-minute YouTube show became the region’s first online-to-TV success, reaching 30 million weekly viewers and transforming how political commentary was delivered across the Arab world.
AlBernameg gained global acclaim, earning international media coverage and leading to Youssef’s appearances on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. The show broke records on YouTube, became a SXSW-recognized digital-to-broadcast milestone, and established Youssef as a bold, fearless commentator. His sharp satire sparked legal challenges and an arrest warrant, but also earned him major honors, including being named one of TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People and receiving the Committee to Protect Journalists’ International Press Freedom Award.
After AlBernameg ended in 2014 due to mounting political pressures, Youssef moved to the United States, where he continued expanding his global presence. He served as a resident fellow at Harvard’s Institute of Politics, appeared on The Daily Show as a Senior Middle East Correspondent, hosted the International Emmy Awards, and starred in the acclaimed documentary Tickling Giants. He also launched the digital series The Democracy Handbook and published the book Revolution for Dummies, offering satirical insights into the Arab Spring.
Beyond entertainment, Youssef is a trained cardiothoracic surgeon, having practiced medicine in Egypt for 13 years and earning membership in the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS). His remarkable journey from operating rooms to political satire has made him one of the most influential voices in the modern Arab world.
